Spicy Asian Snack Mix

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper or more to taste
  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 8 cups rice cereal squares
  • 2 cups chow mein noodles
  • 2 cups dried wasabi peas

Instructions

  • Adjust 2 oven racks to the upper third and lower third. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Line 2 rimmed baking sheets with foil for easy cleanup.
  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, add butter, sugar, soy sauce, hoisin, sesame oil, garlic powder, ginger, and cayenne pepper. Stir until butter is melted and sauce is combined. Remove from heat.
  • In a large bowl, combine walnuts, cereal, chow mein noodles, crackers, and dried peas. Drizzle with sauce mixture and toss well to coat. 
  • Divide evenly among rimmed baking sheets and spread into a single layer. Bake until crispy and fragrant, stirring every 15 minutes, for 55 minutes to 1 hour. Cool completely in pans.
