The best turkey tacos on a white platter.

Authentic? Absolutely not! Ground meat tacos in Mexico are pretty scarce as it is, and ground turkey tacos? Forget about it. It’s not a thing there. But just because something is inauthentic doesn’t mean it is BAD. These are absolutely delicious and have amazing flavor.

Ground turkey is a great alternative to ground beef if you don’t eat red meat or just want something a little lighter (but it still has a lot of protein which we love!). Taco recipes in general are great for meal prep because the meat can be used for salads, bowls, and wraps in addition to tacos.

At a Glance: Here is a quick snapshot of what ingredients are in this recipe.
Please see the recipe card below for specific quantities.

Ingredient notes

  • Taco seasoning: Ingredients for homemade taco seasoning are right in the recipe card in the amount you need. Or, substitute one packet of store-bought taco seasoning.
  • Ground turkey: Look for 93% lean ground turkey. If you get the 99% fat-free ground turkey breast, your meat is going to be dry.
  • Brown sugar: Leave this out if it sounds weird to you.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together chili powder, cumin, paprika, coriander, cayenne pepper, and salt to taste (I like ½ teaspoon), Whisk in cornstarch if desired. (Or, substitute one packet store-bought taco seasoning).

Recipe tips and variations

  • Yield: This recipe makes about 4 cups (1 quart) of delicious Turkey Taco meat. That’s enough for 4 servings, 1 cup of meat each, enough to make 3 or 4 tacos per person.
  • Storage: Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: Cool the cooked meat, then transfer it to a freezer-safe bag and press flat to gently squeeze out the air from the bag as it seals. Label, date, and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator (never at room temperature). Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.
  • Slow cooker:  Sauté the onions in a skillet on the stove. Add the taco seasoning, garlic, and dried oregano. Add the ground turkey and cook until almost done. Transfer the turkey to the slow cooker and add the sauce, brown sugar, cider vinegar, and tomato sauce. Cover and cook on HIGH for 2-3 hours or on LOW for 6-7 hours.
  • Dried spices: Cooking out of the pantry? Substitute ½ teaspoon garlic powder and 1 tablespoon onion powder or 3 tablespoons dried onion flakes for the fresh garlic and onion.
  • Taco toppings: Load it all up! Try lettuce, tomato, avocado (or avocado sauce), guacamole, shredded cheese, sour cream, black olives, minced white onion, cilantro, and minced jalapeños.
  • Salsa: Try mild tomato salsa (pico de gallo), hot salsa, green tomatillo salsa, or corn salsa.
  • Crunchy taco shells: Fry corn tortillas until crispy on the stove or in the oven.
  • Lettuce wraps: This taco meat is delicious on butter lettuce or romaine leaves.
  • Taco salad or bowl: Add the cooked meat to a bowl with chopped lettuce, cooked black beans, tomatoes, scallions, and a creamy cilantro lime dressing. Add cooked brown rice to make a hearty turkey taco bowl. Serve with tortilla chips.
  • Add quinoa: Add cooked quinoa to the mixture to make it more filling or stretch it further.
  • More ground turkey recipes: Turkey Meatloaf and Turkey Chili are tasty way to eat more ground turkey, and Turkey Meatballs are one of the most popular recipes on this site.
  • Ground Chicken Tacos: Easy Ground Chicken Tacos are juicy, perfectly seasoned, and perfect for hectic weeknights. They are also lightning fast, ready in about 15 minutes!

  1. This recipe worked very well for me. It got many compliments and was easy. I made it ahead of time and reheated and served it in my crock pot.

  2. Meggan, Thank you for this delicious recipe. It’s easy even making the spice seasoning mix. I had 1-1/2 lb of turkey so I adjusted the ingredients accordingly except for the cayenne because I’m a sissy and can handle the heat.5 stars

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed them! And I’m so glad you know your limits so you could make them enjoyable to eat instead of painfully spicy ;) -Meggan

  3. Made this tonight for the first time — everyone loved it! This will be our usual taco recipe from now on. Served with pico de gallo, cheese, and sour cream. Yum!5 stars

    1. Hi Steve, I’m so glad you loved the turkey tacos! I just tried the recipe recently with beef too, it blew my mind, I don’t know why it took me this long to try it. Turkey might still be my favorite though. Thank you so much and take care! -Meggan

  4. Dear Meggan, Thank you for your yummy turkey taco recipe! We enjoyed the flavor and texture, and I look forward to making them again.5 stars

    1. Thank you so much for this lovely comment! I love the taco recipe too, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks again and have a great week. -Meggan

  5. Thanks Meggan!! Question for you, do you think it’s important to add the spices to the onions, as opposed to the turkey, once it’s browned? (Big debate between me and my BF :) )5 stars

    1. You’re welcome! I prefer to do it this way, so the flavors have a chance to develop and season the turkey well. Take care! – Meggan

  6. Thanks Meggan! Question do you think it’s important to add the taco seasoning to the onion and not after the ground turkey is already browned?5 stars

  7. Love this recipe! My husband could eat Mexican food every night, but I’m lukewarm on it. Some of the seasoning mixes are too much for me. This one is amazing! I’m sure this can be made with chicken or beef, but the turkey is perfect. The seasoning gives the turkey such great flavor and is not overly filling like ground beef can be. I made this on Tuesday, and I am making it again tonight, Friday. I left out the cayenne pepper only because my husband does not like it too spicy. It’s such a quick and easy meal to pull together. We have already talked about how this would be our choice for Taco Tuesdays. Thank you for a great recipe!!5 stars

  8. Soooo good!! Followed the recipe to a T – it had just the right amount of heat and the taste was so clean. You can definitely tell the difference between ground meat and processed taco seasoning. This is our new favorite…..I even sent the recipe to my kids.
The only adjustment….I added a little more OO bc the onions were sticking to my cast iron. Thanks for the work to create the perfect recipe!!5 stars

    1. You’re so welcome, Megan! Thank you so much for sharing my recipe, I hope your kids love it, too! – Meggan

  9. This recipe is so delicious and easy! I actually substituted the tomato sauce with tomato paste to make the sauce a bit thicker. It is absolutely amazing!5 stars

  10. This changed boring old taco night for us! The addition of onions and tomato sauce to the filling was a hit, however it was really overshadowed by the oven baked flour tortillas. It’s so easy to stuff the tacos with other toppings that way. Kids dug it. Thank you.5 stars

  11. “5 Stars” from this family!
My son and teenage grandson said they were the best they have had and I agree.
Thank you so very much for this 5 star recipe!

  12. Fantastic recipe! I used the tomato paste option and left out the cayenne pepper & cornstarch. The meat needed no further seasoning! I’ll make a double batch next time to freeze half.5 stars

  13. This takes the typical turkey taco meat to another level! (Typically we just brown the meat & add taco seasoning). Loved the additional flavor added from sautéing onions & garlic beforehand. I did not have tomato sauce on hand, but substituted using some chopped adobo chipotle peppers (canned) and about 1/2cup chicken broth.
(Shout out to the fellow reviewer for that adobo suggestion!)
Served the meat over Insta-pot Mexican Quinoa with some diced sweet potato mixed in. An excellent bowl meal!5 stars

  14. I’m watching my cholesterol so I was looking for good turkey tacos.
Wife was not looking forward to turkey tacos. Truth told, I was not expecting much.
I did make two additions. I added 1 finely chopped Chipotle in Adobo, and a couple of shots of Worcestershire Sauce.
These were SO GOOD!! Couple slices of avocado on tortilla and a little fresh cilantro.
If I can get this flavor from Turkey, I’m keeping it.
Thank you so much for this recipe!5 stars

  15. Love the flavors of this dish so much! We eat this on a bed of quinoa, which also has a ton of sauteed onion and garlick in it.5 stars

  16. These tacos were AMAZING!!! I’ve only used leftover Turkey for in the past for Turkey Soup and Sandwiches. After trying these Tacos, however, I am hooked and will be sure to make them regularly from hereon whenever I bake a Turkey for the Holidays. Great recipe Meggan!!!5 stars

  17. Best turkey tacos ever my husband said and I’ve tried tons of recipes. I’m a vegetarian since birth and cook meat blindly and so happy when something comes together so great. I did the precooked version and added it to the crockpot and the only change I made was using a tablespoon tomato paste instead of sauce, my husband has high blood pressure and he was so happy. I put a bit of sour cream, my home made hot sauce, shredded lettuce and shredded cheese and he said it was better than the beef ones he gets every two months, yea! Thank you so much for this recipe, trying another one tomorrow5 stars

  18. Loved these!! I wanted to stretch the recipe and turn 1lb of turkey into 8 servings and wanted to get in some veggies, so I added one cup of cooked brown rice and 3 cups of cauliflower rice. To accommodate that I went with a 15oz can of tomato sauce and did 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning, but everything else I left the same as it was written for the 1lb of turkey. Family loved them, thank you :)5 stars

  19. Literally the best Turkey tacos I’ve ever made. My husband couldn’t believe it was Turkey! This will be on our bi weekly menu rotation.5 stars

  20. But seriously THE ABSOLUTE BEST TACOS EVER!! I can no longer stand the taste of red meat tacos but I’ve missed tacos. Thank you for this. I must have texted your recipe about 20x already. Taco Tuesdays are back.5 stars

    1. Hi Jazz! You’re welcome, and I’m so glad you love them! Taco Tuesdays are great! Thank you! – Meggan

  21. I have always dreaded making turkey tacos for my husband. He loves ground turkey, I’m. Ground beef girl. After reading the views I tried this recipe….THE BEST TURKEY TACOS EVER! So flavorful, so juicy. I forgot to buy the tomato sauce so I blended a can of diced tomatoes I had into an almost sauce and they were still perfect. Thank you!5 stars

  22. These are truly the best. So delicious and juicy and no gamey turkey aftertaste. I have never liked turkey tacos and refused to eat them. I love beef. I didn’t want to have to make turkey tacos for my hubby and something else for myself, so I figured there has to be a way to make ground turkey taste good. I followed the recipe exactly. I used 85% ground turkey. I now will prefer these to beef and chicken. This recipe made me a believer. THANK YOU! I now need a spahetti sauce w ground turkey and a turkey burger recipe to help me make the switch. Please help. I trust you have the perfect recipes.5 stars

  23. This is bomb!!! Thank you. I have IBS, so I left out the onions & garlic, but it was still bomb. Great recipe!5 stars

  24. This is by far THEE BEST turkey taco recipe I have tried. I will FOREVER make this recipe for my turkey tacos. I’m so glad I found your site and looking forward to making more dishes. THANK YOU!!!!!! I made the recipe as is but omitted the salt and cayenne pepper. There was plenty of salt already in the tomato sauce and the finished product was not missing the additional salt. Thanks again!!! :-)5 stars

  25. All I can say is WOW!!!!!! These were exceptionally delicious! Not going to lie when I read the ingredients I was puzzled and thought ain’t no way this is gonna be good but I was so desperate for something new I decided why not!? Apple cider Vinegar? Tomato sauce? Brown sugar? Can’t be right! But man!!!! Let me tell you it is a MUST TRY! These were so flavorful and good this recipe will be a staple in my home now! My man loved them too and ate 6! Lol so good!5 stars

  26. This is fast becoming a family favorite! I made it exactly as described and it turned out great. Thank you!
    Amin (Vancouver, Canada)5 stars

  27. This is a very tasty recipe and I have cooked it several times. Since it’s January and everyone is on a diet, I wanted to track my serving on fitness pal. I did see you have the calories and nutrition information on the bottom, but it does not say what ounce serving the 168 calorie taco is. Also, I’m not sure if the calories include a taco shell. (Probably not)? Could you also provide the ratio of fat to lean turkey you used?
    Thank you,

    1. Hi Evelyn, thank you for the comment! I’m glad you’re enjoying them! I’ve updated the recipe, it makes about 4 cups total. And yes, correct, it doesn’t include the tortillas or any additional toppings. (they are generated by a program and may vary.) I prefer 93% lean turkey, I found that 99% resulted in dry taco meat. Take care! – Meggan

  28. This is the best. I’ve made it for our Bible study group for our taco bar lunch and I will see how they like it. Thanks5 stars

  29. This is the best. I’ve made it for our Bible study group for our taco bar linch and I will see how they like it. Thanks5 stars

  30. How many oz or pounds of Ground Turkey is the recipe for??? So confusingg… the default recipe says 4 servings but I don’t know how many pounds or oz of ground turkey that would be for..

    1. Hi there Melissa, in the recipe card under the “For the tacos” section you can find the amount of turkey to use. This recipe uses one pound of turkey for the 4 servings and you can adjust the serving size as needed. – Meggan

  31. absolutely amazing Had 4 women over for dinner and made this and they all took the recipe home with them So thank you5 stars

  32. I’ve been wanting to make turkey tacos for a while and I am so happy with this recipe. I made it exactly as written and I like that the seasoning is not a packet. The packets tend to be high in salt and many have wheat as a thickener which I cannot have. Next time I will add a little more salt but that was my fault as I did not taste test. The vinegar and brown sugar made me a little nervous but I can see that they are needed and I didn’t taste either of them in the finished mixture. They blended in well. I will probably make a bigger batch next time and freeze some so I have some on hand.

Great recipe! Can’t wait to try others!5 stars

  33. To describe these turkey tacos as delicious is an understatement!! Quick and easy to prepare, we never tire of having these yummy tacos. Even leftover, we look forward to indulging again and again. We accompany these turkey tacos with homemade pico de gallo and guacamole. Nutritious and practically guilt free! Since trying this recipe, I now use ground turkey instead of beef for so many other delicious meals with great delight. Such as lasagna and chili. And like Meggan mentions here, this meal is a frequent go-to nearly weekly all are sure to enjoy. Thank you, Meggan!5 stars

  34. I made this on a whim! I had all the ingredients. Only the meat was organic ground Turkey. It was super quick, easy and delicious! Big hit with the hubby and son. Thank you 😊5 stars

  35. This recipe is a knockout! I prefer turkey because it’s lower in calories and fat and have always struggled to make it taste “taco-ish”. This recipe took my taco-bout-sad to Taco-bout-fantastic! I followed the recipe but did exclude cayenne because I have little kids. There wasn’t any left….it was the most loved meal I’ve made in a while. Use the actual recipe, you will not regret it!5 stars

  36. Bravo! I have to cut out red meat of my diet and one of my favorite food- ground beef tacos. I love this recipe, followed it exactly, and better than any other taco I’ve had! Thank you for sharing. Taco Tuesday’s are back😀

  37. Thank you for this recipe!! I’m so glad I came across it! Simply delicious! No need to make any adjustments! I usually make my tacos with ground turkey but today I’ll be using ground beef instead. I’m sure they’ll be just as delicious! Thanks again!!5 stars

  38. You’re not kidding – these ARE the best turkey tacos! I made them for Cinco de Mayo last night and they were amazing! The spices and ratio of sauce to meat was perfect! Usually ground turkey tacos does not pack the same flavor punch as beef tacos – these definitely did! I followed the recipe exactly and was told by my family that they were the best ever! These will definitely be in heavy dinner rotation for us! Thanks for sharing this!5 stars

  39. Made this and it was delicious. I used the Tomatoe sauce and simmered for about 1.5 hours so the taco meat was not wet. I used to just sauté onions and use a packet of seasoning but this recipe has upped my turkey taco night! Awesome!!5 stars

  40. The only change I made was I only used half of brown sugar. This recipe was amazing. My fam loved it. It is definitely a keeper. I especially liked the onions in the meat. Yummmmy!5 stars

    1. Hi Berenizze, the nutrition facts are for one serving, with is one-fourth of the recipe. Enjoy! – meggan

  41. This was fabulous. I did not use the brown sugar or the tomato sauce as I have a severe tomato allergy. I used water instead and believe me you do not miss the tomato sauce in this recipe at all. My husband says so. This went well with my keto tortillas. Yum, yum. This is a keeper.

  42. These were delicious! My mom can’t stand ground turkey usually but liked these tacos. Thanks for the great recipe!5 stars

  43. I am new to cleansing and eating ground turkey. I am so glad I stumbled upon this recipe! Even my meat and potatoes only boyfriend loved this! I did everything exactly the same as recipe and it was great. Thanks so much for sharing!5 stars

  44. This delicious recipe idea was very satisfying. We made this and it was quite yummy. My original thought was it may not be good but to my surprise and delight it was fantastic. We added a side of guacamole and it was all great together. Thank You!

  45. Amazing – this is 100% approved by my very picky self as well as my husband! Thank you!! The complexity of flavors is wonderful and we found ourselves loving the little tang from the vinegar and the slight sweetness of the sugar. A healthy twist on Taco Tuesday.5 stars

  46. Can I substitute another spice for the coriander or will it be ok if I omit it? It’s the only spice I don’t have on hand. So excited to try this!5 stars

    1. Hi Colleen, you can either omit it or add just a little more cumin to the dish. The cumin has a stronger flavor than the coriander, so I would suggest a pinch or two. – Meggan

  47. Excellent seasoning blend! I was out of my packaged taco mix and used your recipe combo instead. I will never go back to the packaged mix again!!! Everything worked out so well, all the ingredients were perfection. Now it is our family favorite.5 stars

  48. This was amazing! I measured seasonings instead of using a packet, so I could soften the spice for my kids. It was so good. We all LOOOOVED it. I highly recommend.5 stars

  49. This was so very good! I’ve been making turkey tacos forever but this kicked them up a notch. Both my husband and I loved it. What I cannot BELIEVE is how much my incredibly picky 8 year old ATE IT UP. Thanks for the great recipe!5 stars

  50. It was the best turkey tacos I have made! I didn’t have tomato sauce so I used a cup of ketchup. And also didn’t have apple cider vinegar but just used regular vinegar and it still tasted delicious!5 stars

  51. These were so good! Literally the key ingredients missing from every other recipe – brown sugar and apple cider vinegar.

Thank you – just my life easier with two picky eaters!5 stars

  52. Just made these for a quick lunch as had some chilli & lime tacos to use … yummy the rich flavour of the finished turkey mince was right up my street already my raving about them
To family & friends! Go on try it 😄5 stars

  53. I absolutely love this recipe, the only thing I omit because I don’t like the taste of is the coriander & apple cider vinegar. Also, I do use the corn starch that is listed as optional. Also, I use canned sauce, not jar sauce for this recipe. I don’t eat red meat anymore, so this is a great alternative if you don’t either. Also, since tacos are one my favorite meals this is a keeper in my recipe book.5 stars

  54. The seasonings are great. Turkey tacos have never tasted so good! This will go on our favorites list! (There was no need for cornstarch either.)5 stars

  55. This THE most delicious turkey taco recipe I have come across….I did only use 1 can of tomato sauce with two lbs. of ground turkey it was the consistency I like, I did double everything else.5 stars

  56. My family absolutely loves this recipe. This is our GO-TO for Taco Nights. My kids devour them!!! Thank you so much for this delicious recipe.

  57. I’m not sure if it’s a cultural thing, but my family really did not care for the flavors of this meat. When I read the recipe I thought the addition of cider vinegar and brown sugar was strange, but decided to try it anyway. However it simply didn’t taste authentic. It was more like a cheap Americanized version of Mexican flavors–like adding ketchup to tacos. Having lived in Arizona our whole lives we’ve grown up with some of the best Mexican food in the country, and tacos are a way of life. Don’t think this one makes the cut, unfortunately.

    1. Hi Megan, I have traveled to Mexico monthly for years, so I certainly have a grasp on Mexican food. The minute you saw “turkey tacos” you should have been tipped off that this wasn’t authentic. This is absolutely a riff on Americanized tacos, like the ground beef version but made with ground turkey. I don’t really feel like I have to apologize because if you “know Mexican food” you should have known this wasn’t it. I know Mexican food but I still like these. Anyway, I hope you follow your gut in the future and don’t make recipes that appear on the face of them to not meet your standards, as this one didn’t. This was never going to be authentic, and it isn’t trying to be. There is no “authentic ground turkey taco.”

    1. Hi Joy, I’m SO GLAD you loved the turkey tacos! I made them today too. I just love them. I have never tried them with shrimp. I’m happy to test it out and report back; it’s just going to take me a few days. But I’ll find out! I feel like it would be good. How could it be bad? I know it’s going to be amazing. I’m really excited to try! Thanks for the idea! -Meggan

  58. MUST MAKE! I am not a beginner, however, this recipe is great for everyone from the novice cook to the advanced. I followed this exactly as written, used the tomato sauce and did not need corn starch. The flavor so DELICIOUS and moist! I couldn’t stop eating!5 stars

    1. Thank you so much Ashti! I really do make these every week. Or almost every week. I just love them! Thanks again! I hope you have a great day. -Meggan

  59. Delicious! Meat was so moist and flavorful. I reduced the tomato sauce by half Because don’t like it too wet, but otherwise followed recipe exactly. Served with healthy refried black beans and it was a huge hit with the family. Won’t make turkey tacos any other way. Thanks so much for a great recipe.5 stars

  60. II am not a good cook. It took me a great deal of time to make this, as with everything else that comes out of my kitchen. Most of the time was searching for spices. However, the end result was worth the effort. Terrific. Thank you.5 stars

    1. Wow, thank you so much Jim! This just makes my day. I’m glad you liked them. -Meggan

  61. Oh…my…wow. Love it! I had to double the recipe so we could include my boyfriend’s roommate, and I’m glad I did, because with the inevitable leftovers…I’m thinking nachos tomorrow! I can’t get enough, I loved this dish! I did use the corn starch and the tomato paste+water options, and boy is it rich and juicy! And, very easy to meal prep with. I got the spices mixed up and veggies chopped ahead of time, so all I had to do was toss it on the stove when people were ready to eat!5 stars

  62. I made this recipe because I needed something quick to do with ground turkey I thought tacos would be easy enough. My son is fairly picky, and I was scared he wouldn’t like the ground turkey so I turned to Google just see how I could treat it differently than ground beef. My son loved them! He actually liked them better than what I usually make.. Thanks!5 stars

  63. These are the best turkey tacos I’ve ever made! Definitely a keeper. Thank you also for the “jump to recipe” feature. I was pressed for time and using my phone in the kitchen, so this was the most convenient feature.5 stars

  64. Love this recipe! I made a few adjustments because my husband is a crazy picky eater. I used your tomato paste suggestion but reduced it to about 3 tablespoons. I was out of Apple Cider Vinegar so used white wine vinegar. My husband though it was a pan of sloppy joes & I thought oh oh. But…. the taste was amazing. The meat was crazy tender. It was a hit and I’ll definitely make this again.5 stars

  65. This has become our favorite taco recipe ever! I have already made them three times! :) The homemade taco seasoning seems to be the key!5 stars

  66. I tried this recipe but swapped out the tomato sauce for about half a can of diced tomatoes, and added cumin, cayenne pepper, chilli pepper, and chipotle seasoning. It was delicious and I will definitely make it again!4 stars

  67. I made these tonight since ground turkey was on a great sale last week and they’re very good. Sauce is a new interesting take on taco filling though. I made Spanish rice and had black beans on the side. 5 stars

  68. These were delicious. I forgot the onion but they still turned out great. My husband was super sceptical when he heard “turkey tacos” but after eating them he’s won over. These are great paired with corn and green chilies as a side cooked in the cast iron skillet, instead of the regular Mexican rice side.5 stars

  69. great recipe! only thing i would’ve left out is the tomato sauce cause it taste like sloppy joes with it. Next time I’ll just do the taco seasoning and maybe add a little cumin and chili powder to taste. Also if you’re on paleo diet try hearts of romaine or butter lettuce instead of tortillas, very delicious!!5 stars

    1. Hey Thomas, sorry you didn’t love the tomato sauce. For whatever reason it works for me, but yeah, SO easy to leave it out! I’ve eaten this turkey meat on butter lettuce a zillion times, it’s so good! So good. Good call. Thank you so much for leaving a comment! Take care.

  70. I do like turkey tacos and yours look and sound amazing.  I also don’t choose turkey as my first choice for meatloaf!  Too dry in my opinion.  I like your husbands junk food tip, something my husband would totally do :)5 stars

  71. Hhhmmmm…. Turkey tacos? I never thought I’d utter those two words in the same sentence! But I must admit, I think you convinced me to give them a try. The do look delicious!

    1. I hope you do, because I too shun ground turkey foods! LOL! Except for these. This is my one exception, and they are really good. You may have to get over the mental block of “I’m eating ground turkey” but if you can just take one bite, I think you’ll be convinced. :D

  72. Hi, Kilika, so sorry you didn’t like these. Hope you’re able to adjust it to your liking next time. Take care and sorry! – Meggan
