Ingredient notes

  • Brownies: Of course, you can make homemade brownies from scratch to cube and layer them into this dish, but I love to save time with the semi-homemade route. No one will notice you started with boxed brownie mix, promise!
  • Sweetened condensed milk: Combining this with the boxed chocolate pudding mix makes its consistency remarkably silky and rich.
  • Whipped topping: Cool Whip is a Midwestern staple, although any brand will do. Or, substitute an equal amount of whipped cream.
  • Oreo cookies: When making the crushed Oreos, tread lightly with a food processor or blender (unless you want Oreo dust). I usually add the cookies to a plastic bag and smash them with a rolling pin to crush them without obliterating them.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease the bottom of a 9-inch by 9-inch pan. In a large bowl, add brownie mix, eggs, oil, and water and mix with an electric mixer or stir by hand. Pour into greased pan.

Recipe tips and variations

  • Yield: This chocolate dessert makes 12 generous servings.
  • Storage: Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Make ahead: The trifle can be assembled one day ahead.
  • Mix and match: Love the concept of a trifle but want to mix things up? Trade the brownies for Blondies or try vanilla pudding in place of the chocolate pudding. I’ve secretly always wanted to add peanut butter to this dessert, too. Use mint Oreos for a minty-fresh version. For a heartier topping, make a cream cheese mixture with whipped topping and softened cream cheese. It’s a little bit like cheesecake!
  • Make them mini: Individual servings of Oreo brownie trifle are ideal for parties and showers, bake sales, or food gifts. The number of servings depends on the size of the vessel you choose. We used a 5-ounce square dessert cup (Culinary Hill may earn a small commission if you purchase through this link).

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a trifle be made the night before?

For this Oreo version, you can assemble it the night before. The cookies themselves may soften, but everything else holds up pretty well.

Does trifle have to have jelly?

As far as I’m concerned, any dessert made in a Trifle Dish is a Trifle, jelly or not.

    1. Hi Emily, yes, I make this using a 20 ounce package of regular brownie mix. If it’s not, I would follow what the box itself says, what’s important is that you have brownies in the end to build your trifle with. – Meggan

    1. Hi Dina, for the best outcome, I recommend up to a day before. You could make it two days before, but it may not hold and taste the same. Sorry about that! – Meggan

  1. My pudding mixture came out pretty liquid-y. Will it become any thicker over night? I haven’t added it to the trifle yet. It’s currently in a separate Tupperware container

    1. Hi Courtney, have you folded in the 8 ounces of whipped topping to the pudding mixture? That should help thicken it up. If not, is it possible you used regular (cook and serve) pudding? I’m sorry it is watery! – Meggan

  2. I did everything it said but the pudding, condensed milk, and whipped cream mixture was heavy and thick and clumpy and I kept adding liquid and it wouldn’t thin out, what do I do?!

    1. Hi Mary, I’m so sorry your trifle mix was clumpy! Was your whipped cream frozen or very very cold? Or possibly the condensed milk and pudding wasn’t smooth and combined before the whipped cream was added. – Meggan

  3. Would this work with “real” whipped heavy cream or would it fall apart you think? It looks awesome but something about cool woo I don’t like

    1. Hi Shannon, it will work just fine with real whipped cream. It will probably taste better, actually. I completely understand your aversion to cool whip. In my experience, there has never been a situation that whipped cream couldn’t handle better than cool whip. I would just refrigerate after a while, I think, because cool whip has all the chemical stabilizers that keep it from dying at room temperature. But it’s not like whipped cream is going to melt immediately or anything, either. Thank you! -Meggan

    1. Hi Jane! Yes. The brownies may soften slightly (NOT get soggy). I actually prefer it that way because it feels like more of a cohesive dessert. If this concerns you in the slightest, though, you can make the components the day before and store them separately (make the brownies and keep on the counter, make the pudding layer and keep it in the fridge). And just assemble it in the morning or whenever you need it (at least 2 hours in advance). I hope this is helpful! Thanks Jane!

    2. I don’t feel like the brownies belonged to be honest. And even before I made it..I was iffy on it.

My husband said Angel food cake would have worked better and I agree.

A mistake on my part was getting “oreo” pudding mix(it was legit just vanilla with a few oreo chunks. I added more).
My husband pushed for it because he is apparently a chocolate hater…lol..
He did admit it needed chocolate pudding. It was just too sweet.

I also followed the directions on the pudding box not realizing I was suppose to use sweetened condensed milk..and the box said milk(we will see if it sets..we ate a bit before it had fully chilled). I am glad I didn’t though. I feel it would have just made it way too sweet.

I should have used a smaller bowl to make it in also. It was a smidge to big. I did buy extra whipped topping. And ended up using it all.

I also added extra Oreos..to each layer.

If I make it again I’ll definitely do chocolate pudding(probably use sweetened condensed milk too). I’ll use angel food cake instead.

I love the brownie though but think it would be better in a trifle without Oreos. My husband did suggest something with caramel and removing the Oreos and that sounds delicious too.

I haven’t made anything in a while so it was fun. I let my 14 month old help stir the brownie bater. He loved it.
I think I’ll have fun fiddling with various trifle recipes for the next few months..and having a new helper will be fun.

  4. I had this at s church potluck.. it was not only beautiful, but delectable.  Making it for Thankdgiving to wow my grands❤️5 stars

    1. Hi Carolyn, I feel pretty confident that your grandkids are going to love it! Thank you so much for giving it a try. :D
