When choosing the top models, she considered everything from electric to manual to heavy-duty commercial options, too, as well as what makes sense for the average home. The good news is that there is a fry cutter for every kind of fry eater out there, so you can rival your favorite fast food restaurant.

Reviews of The Best French Fry Cutters

1. Meggan’s Top Pick: Prep Solutions Tower French Fry Cutter

Using a Progressive French fry cutter to cut a potato into matchsticks.

After testing and chopping (and tasting) many potatoes with different french fry cutters, Meggan decided the Prep Solutions Tower French Fry Cutter deserved a permanent spot in her kitchen. Thanks to its small size, It’s a no-brainer for amateur cooks looking to elevate a meal with homemade fries every once and a while as it doesn’t require a ton of room to store. Plus, it was the easiest and most practical to use of all the models she tested.

“I found it easier to push down than to use a hand crank,” Meggan says. “It’s basically a single-use device, but it works perfectly for cutting fries. I realized that I would make french fries 3 to 4 times per month at most, and therefore a small, compact, lightweight, inexpensive unit would be best.”

The only caveat is that this French fry cutter only comes with one sharp blade for one shape and size of fries. But having a variety of sizes and shapes isn’t something Meggan needs in her homemade French fries. She says this would be the only blade she would use anyway. Meggan also notes that this model is easy to take apart and clean, particularly because there were no stuck pieces of potato left behind.

The Specs:

  • Material: Stainless steel blades and BPA-free plastic
  • Dimensions: 8.5″ L x 4.63″ W x 4.63″ H
  • Blade shape: Round
  • Weight: 470 g
  • Features: Removable grid and non-skid base

The Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Makes smooth, clean cuts
  • Compact enough for convenient storage
  • Easy to disassemble and clean as all parts are dishwasher-safe
  • Lightweight

The Cons:

  • Only comes in one standard blade size

What Others Are Saying:

Bob Vila, Saveur, and Best Reviews named it the best budget option in their roundups of french fry cutters, the Prep Solutions Tower French Fry Cutter model has more than 5,000 customer reviews and a 4.3-star rating on Amazon.

2. Best Budget: Geedel French Fry Cutter

Credit: Amazon

Lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to use, the Geedel French Fry Cutter makes a perfect starter french fry cutter for beginners that are not sure just how much they’ll need to use a cutter. For the price, it’s great for occasional use and it’s so much easier to use than other cranking options that require a bit more manpower.

With only one blade size, Meggan says that the cutter made some curved potato slices that were not uniform. It also works better on smaller-sized potatoes or ones cut in half, and the plastic construction did feel more flimsy than others she tried. But all things considered, the Geedel model still makes a great, inexpensive entry point into the world of at-home fry cutting that is much better than cutting by hand.

The Specs:

  • Material: Stainless steel blades and plastic
  • Dimensions: 10.04” L x 4.53” W x 4.92” H
  • Blade shape: Square
  • Weight: 0.6 lbs

The Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • No assembly required

The Cons:

  • Hand wash only
  • Only one blade size
  • Plastic feels flimsy
  • Only works with smaller potatoes

What Others Are Saying:

The Geedel French Fry Cutter was named the best value option by Best Reviews Guide, and it also has a 4.1 star rating from nearly 5,000 Amazon reviews.

3. Best Electric: Sopito Electric French Fry Cutter

Credit: Amazon

Electric french fry cutters are the way to go if you’re not in the mood to work too hard. With the Sopito Electric French Fry Cutter all you have to do is push a button. Immediately, the cutter pushes potatoes into the blade for perfectly even potato slices. Then you press the “backwards” button to return the press to reload it. The two-button control makes it easy to use and it provides even, consistent fries reminiscent of professional ones. Move over, McDonald’s!

However, this model is massive, takes up a lot of unnecessary counter space, and can be harder to store. Plus, it’s a little more pricey compared to handheld models—but the convenience can outweigh the cost if you use it often enough.

The Specs:

  • Material: Stainless steel
  • Dimensions: 19″ L x 9″ W x 8.25″ H
  • Blade shape: Round
  • Weight: 10.7 lbs
  • Features: Two different blades, 0.5-inch and 0.375-inch, two-button controller

The Pros:

  • Electric
  • No strength required
  • More variety than one-bladed models

  • Expensive
  • Difficult to change blades
  • Large and heavy

Commercial french fry cutters are meant more for restaurants, but can create the most consistent restaurant-quality fries, especially if you plan on making them often! The RovSun Commercial French Fry Cutter is a standout model thanks to its four options for blade shapes. It’s also well-constructed and durable—steel is the main material, after all—standing the test of time and withstanding commercial-grade wear and tear.

It’s lighter than other similar commercial-grade options, but just as capable. It’s clunky, but it’s also easy and fast to clean, which is crucial in any kitchen.

The Specs:

  • Corrosion-proof steel
  • Easy to clean

5. Best with Handle: NewStar Foodservice Commercial Grade French Fry Cutter

Credit: Wayfair

The NewStar Foodservice Commercial Grade French Fry Cutter has a cult-like following in the world of french fry cutters. Meggan liked how easy it was to use and that the long extended handle was comfortable. The ergonomic handle works in a lever-type motion, so it does require a little elbow grease to push the potato through. The result, however, is a beautifully, professionally cut fry.

Its V-shaped trough can handle potatoes up to 6 inches and it can even be mounted on the wall if needed, and the suction-cup feet keep it sturdy from slipping. It’s best for those not looking to exert much physical effort for tasty fries.

The Specs:

  • Material: Aluminum and stainless steel
  • Dimensions: 20.5″ L x 10.5″ W x 9.7″ H
  • Blade shape: Round
  • Weight: 12lbs
  • Features: Two blades: 0.5” and 0.375”

The Pros:

  • Can be wall-mounted
  • Uses suction cups to adhere to surface
  • Sturdy construction
  • Includes two blades for cutting variety
  • Available in black and green
  • Ergonomic design

The Cons:

  • Hand wash only
  • Side crank is difficult to operate
  • Changing the blades requires several screws
  • Costly
  • Bulky and heavy

What Others Are Saying:

The NewStar FoodService Commercial Grade French Fry Cutter has a 4.7-star rating and more than 5,700 reviews on Amazon. It’s also Bob Vila’s best commercial pick and Best Reviews’ choice for best overall.

6. Best Professional: Sopito Professional Potato Cutter Stainless Steel

Credit: Amazon

The Sopito Professional Potato Cutter Stainless Steel gives you almost all the benefits of a commercial-grade cutter. It works with any size potato and makes smooth, consistent cuts that result in uniform-looking fries. It also comes with two blade sizes, which is more than enough to produce a variety of cuts. Meggan didn’t love how poorly the suction cups held up and that it required more assembly than most other models.

But this french fry cutter comes at a reasonable price compared to some of the other commercial models and makes for delectable, well-cut fries.

The Specs:

  • Material: Stainless steel
  • Dimensions: 8.3” L x 5.1” W x 5.1” H
  • Blade shape: Round
  • Weight: 4.4lbs
  • Features: Interchangeable blades

The Pros:

  • Accommodates any size potato
  • Includes two blade sizes
  • Makes uniform cuts

The Cons:

  • Difficult to operate
  • Not user-friendly
  • Suction cups slid on the counter

What Others Are Saying:

Named best overall by Bob Vila and Best Products, this Sopito model was also named best for everyday use by Best Reviews. It also has a 4.5-star rating and more than 8,400 reviews on Amazon.

More French Fry Cutters to Consider

PrepNaturals 3-in-1 French Fry Cutter

Prefer to cut your fries into different thicknesses? This cutter box from PrepNatruals has three different blades that can be used to create the classic, thin shoestring fries and two different thicknesses for wedges. It can also be used for things like apples and carrots to take some effort out of chopping. The additional blades mean more storage, but this could be another great option if you like the compact design of the Prep Solutions but want more sizes. The PrepNaturals 3-in-1 French Fry Cutter is available at Amazon for $19.99.

POP AirFry Mate

Recognized by Food & Wine as a great french fry cutter, the POP AirFry Mate comes with two interchangeable blades to cut 0.5-inch or 0.25-inch fries. It works well with potatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots and has also seen success in prepping other less starchy veggies like onions and cucumbers. It gets an honorable mention though, since it can be tricky to use, needs a perfectly flat surface, and requires some oomph to press the lever down. The POP AirFry Mate is available at Amazon for $39.99.

Cuisinart PrepExpress French Fry Cutter

The Cuisinart PrepExpress French Fry Cutter just didn’t cut it. It makes fine enough fries (in both regular and steak sizes), but there are other models that do it better. We still like the price point, though, and the convenient interior blade storage. The Cuisinart PrepExpress French Fry Cutter is available at Amazon for $24.95.

ICO Stainless Steel 2-Blade French Fry Potato Cutter

In terms of high-quality materials, the ICO Stainless Steel 2-blade French Fry Potato Cutter is there. The price is pretty affordable, and its results seem to be on par with the Sopito models. Still, it slices potatoes circularly and requires the user to cut off the ends of the potato prior. It also doesn’t work for either sweet potatoes or yams, which is another bust. The ICO Stainless Steel 2-Blade French Fry Potato Cutter is available at Amazon for $23.99.

Why You Can Trust Us

I’m Stephanie, a food, lifestyle, and sustainability writer who specializes in product reviews. I sincerely enjoy the greasy allure of french fries (especially homemade ones!). I worked on this best French fry cutters roundup with Meggan, the Executive Chef behind Culinary Hill.

Meggan has always put an emphasis on the Midwestern meals from her childhood, so it should be no surprise that it includes a lot of twists on the classics. As someone who has been perfecting her Homemade French Fry recipe, she took it upon herself to try out several french fry cutters to determine the best one for her kitchen. She took into consideration how easy each model was to use, the fry thickness, and how compact the gadget was for storage as she theoretically would only use it a few times a month.

“The large, expensive french fry cutters don’t make sense financially or storage-wise because I’m not making french fries all day, every day,” she says.

What to Consider Before Buying a French Fry Cutter

Before buying a french fry cutter, there are a few things to consider, including how often you plan on using the gadget.

Blades: Most French fry cutters have stainless steel blades, but you can determine the quality based on how durable and sharp they are. These blades should easily slice through potatoes without much force. Different-sized options will also give you different-sized fries. Most models will have blades that cut fries to 0.375-inch or 0.5-inch thickness. If it’s extremely slim fries you’re looking for, try a cutter with blades that cut to 0.25-inch thickness.

Size: In most at-home scenarios, you’ll only need a standard french fry cutter. Commercial french fry cutters are typically used in restaurants and other professional food establishments that need to make a ton of fries, and they can be larger and harder to store

Type: Manual models require you to physically push the potato through the slicer either vertically or horizontally. Automatics work more like a food processor but can be more expensive than handheld models. While an automatic fry cutter is easier to use, it’s not necessary for casual fry-eaters who only make fries every once in a blue moon.

Do You Need a French Fry Cutter?

Most amateur cooks don’t need a french fry cutter. This kitchen tool comes in handy, for sure, but unless you will be making fries often and in large batches, it’s just another tool to take up counter or storage space.

That being said, fry cutters provide more consistent french fries, ensuring they will all be cooked evenly in your oven or air fryer. Cutting by hand is also a meticulous process that requires some decent knife skills, but a cutter, in contrast, will make easy, even work of a somewhat time-consuming process.

How to Use a French Fry Cutter

French fry cutters work best with potatoes between 6 to 8 inches in length (though you can also use cutters for other fruits, veggies, and starches, too—see below!). Most manual models will either feature a handle that moves a potato through the blade horizontally as you push the handle or use a vertical blade that cuts the potato from bottom to top when you press down through its protective lid.

If you’re using an electric cutter, these are automatic, so they only require you to plug them in, drop in your potato, and push the button. Before slicing, make sure to pick the blade according to the thickness you prefer the fry. Cutters that come with a variety of blade thicknesses will give you more range for your fries.

How to Clean a French Fry Cutter

Not all french fry cutters are dishwasher safe, but the ones that take significantly less time and effort to clean. Remove the blades and disassemble each part, washing them separately. The cleaning process for french fry cutters that are not dishwasher safe is similar: Disassemble each part and wash separately. Just be careful, though. Those blades can be sharp!

What Else Can You Put In a French Fry Cutter?

The right french fry cutter can be quite versatile. If the blades are sharp and strong enough, it should be able to take on other various vegetables, too, including apples, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, onions, radishes, and zucchini, as well as harder starches like sweet potatoes and Yukon Golds.

  1. Why don’t I have one of these yet? We bought an air fryer maybe 4 years ago and I started making French fries about once a week. Plus, I have been eating at In-N-Out Burger for 60 years and their huge manual French fry machine is always in a window. I’ve probably watched them use it a thousand time.! Yet I never thought about buying my own until I read this test. Thanks, Steph!

When you test air fryers please include the Instant Omni Pro 19 QT Air Fryer Toaster Oven Combo. We keep upgrading our air fryer and the Instant is the best we have found. It does everything and we use it 2 or 3 times a day

    1. Hi Bruce, thank you so much for your comment! I’ll pass along your thanks to Steph! I agree with you on the Instant Omni Pro, I tested it while researching the best rotisserie ovens. It’s a great appliance! Take care! – Meggan

  2. Thank you for your article. I have a French cutter. It is at least 20 years old and it doesn’t cut very good. The whole potato does not go through and I have to push the end of the potato through. I like your top pick.
I enjoy your emails and have used your recipes. I always forget about making a comment. I will try to change that. I appreciate your website.
