Recipe ingredients

Labeled ingredients for ham and cheese sliders.

Ingredient notes

  • Soft square dinner rolls: Any dinner rolls can be used (I like the Hawaiian Sweet rolls).
  • Worcestershire sauce: In a pinch, you can substitute soy sauce.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Place the oven rack in the middle position and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Slice the bread rolls in half, horizontally. Spread 4 tablespoons of the yellow mustard evenly on the cut sides of the roll tops and bottoms.  Place the roll bottoms cut side up in a 13-inch by 9-inch baking dish.

  1. Fold the ham slice into thirds, and then in half. Place one piece of ham on each bottom. Fold the Swiss cheese in the same manner as the ham and place on top of the ham. Season with freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Top with the roll tops.

  1. In a medium bowl, combine butter, onion, and poppy seeds. Place in the microwave and heat until the butter is melted and the onions are softened about one minute. Whisk in the Worcestershire sauce, the garlic powder, and the two remaining tablespoons of mustard. Brush the sides and the tops of the sandwiches liberally with the poppy seed mixture using a pastry brush, and spoon the remaining solids over the tops.

  1. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and allow time for the sandwiches to absorb the sauce, about ten minutes. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake uncovered until the cheese has melted and the tops are slightly firm, about 7 to 9 minutes. Allow the sandwiches to cool, about 10 minutes.

Recipe tips and variations

  • Yield: This cheesy dish makes 12 sliders; enough to feed 6 hungry snackers or 9 to 12 if served as part of a larger appetizer spread such as a tailgate menu.
  • Storage: Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 4 days.
  • Make ahead: Feel free to assemble and brush the sandwiches with poppy seed butter (complete through step 5), then cover the pan and refrigerate for up to 1 day.
  • Mix up your fillings: Ham and Swiss aren’t your only options. Try this same slider style with roast beef and cheddar, turkey and gouda, or chicken and Mozzarella.

  1. SO GOOD. I made these last night for a small group and they went fast! I think I could’ve doubled the batch and still not had anything left. Thank you sooooo much for this great recipe.5 stars

  2. I think I posted these on my Facebook page the other day, Meggan, so it was nice to come back and take a closer look at the process. And in any case, I need my regular ‘Culinary Hill fix’.

My, what a gorgeous-sounding recipe idea! I could even see these served as a BBQ side!5 stars

  3. Just look at those delicious looking things.  They should be xxxx rated.  I’m gonna make those babies GF.  Great idea.  5 stars

    1. Great recipe, but I’m struggling with the calories count. The sweet Hawaiian buns are 90 cal. per bun.. your serving size says two sliders? Where does the 111 come in? Not counting the meat, cheese, butter, etc.

    2. Hi Todd, the recipe is written using generic dinner rolls, which have 33 calories each. If you use Hawaiian buns (which are delicious!) you’ll need to increase the calorie count. I hope this helps! – Meggan
